In June 1944 Saipan was the location of savage battle during the liberation of the Marianas Islands. The Japanese had made fortresses out of the islands of Guam, Tinian, Rota and Saipan. The landings in the Marianas were so large and complex that they were called "the D-Days in the Pacific". The civilians were so indoctrinated by Japanese propaganda, at least a thousand jumped to their deaths out of fear rather than surrender to the American Marines- hence the name "Suicide Cliffs". Men, women and children. American veterans who saw it said that it will haunt them for the rest of their life.PFC Guy Gabaldon, a Mexican-American from Los Angeles, California, who was raised by Japanese-Americans, used a combination of street Japanese and guile to convince over a thousand soldiers and civilians alike that U.S. troops were not barbarians, and that they would be well treated upon surrender. For his outstanding bravery, Gabaldon received a Silver Star, which was upgraded to the Navy Cross. (see Wikipedia article)A little over a year later two B-29 bombers took off from airfields on Tinian and dropped the atomic bombs that ended the war.Maybe some places are so poisoned by innocent blood that they will never be right again.
Yeah, in 2006.

Living teletubbies...wow.?
The way I see it, Comcast should have expected it.You screw around with your subscribers threatening to put cap limits and then proceed to use "throttling", you're bound to piss some of them off that will do something like this as a protest. |

Man, I had to read that one a few times. It means that Tarou bought a book in addition to some other activity, which might have been buying something else, or might have been some other action other than buying. Because of the implication of "additionality" (just made up that word), the most likely context is that he'd bought something else. But there could be other actions, though to bother using "mo" there'd need to be some kind of implication of "additionality". Like say if it was a library where you could either borrow or buy books, you might be able to say "The children all borrowed comics. Tarou also bought a book".I think you're right about the usage not being identical across the two languages, but in this case I think what matters is getting to the same functionality by some means or other. I've had a couple too many beers to be confident about that, though.

As I understand it (and please correct me if I'm wrong), Chrome OS will be very focused on web-based applications, which is where most of Google's business lies. It's supposed to be very lightweight and aimed at devices like netbooks. That sounds like it would not be a very good operating system for applications like gaming. So why is there speculation that Chrome OS might dethrone Windows? It sounds like like Google is going for a niche market, and not so much coming up with a general purpose OS. |
