While their actions re. file-sharing are symptomatic of the overall problem. The national ID database is indicative of what's wrong with Labourhttp://www.no2id.net/

I don't have a problem with this idea as an alternative. I use GMail and occasionally Google Documents. I assumed that this project was going to be designed as an alternative to people who just want to browse the web and read email. Based on these videos it seems like they are trying to completely discard the idea of local file storage and software as a silly idea. Those videos are a freaking joke. This is like throwing out the back seat of a car and talking about how much storage you have. How is this operating system an improvement when it's really just a loss of control, privacy, and features. Sorry, but a fast boot time and less chance of viruses do not make up for it..
It only seems reasonable to me to attempt increase food production while trying to foster population control measures and birth control practices simultaneously.Neither one of these two solutions is going to prevent massive famine and die-offs on its own.The thing that astounds me is that people talk about this like it's a minor problem, and that they won't be affected. Do you understand the level of political instability that this is going to inject into the more heavily populated parts of the world? It's going to create a lot more problems than just some people going hungry on the other side of the world. Governments are going to start failing under the pressure, and when governments collapse, terrorism and junta-style despotism flourish. To throw aside the ways this affects us in the Western world directly, you must realize that we're talking about a problem that's going kills as many people as both the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki (deaths including after-effects total about 220,000) every 9 days. We consider those events a terrifying atrocity now, but you must consider that the rate at which hunger kills people is going to skyrocket. As it stands, 25000 people die every day from hunger now, and it's going to get a lot worse. And now our grain reserves are almost entirely depleted. Population is going up, especially in poor, politically unstable regions. How long will it be until the two atom bombs worth of deaths are taking place every day?We have to find a solution for this. Anything we can do to even ease it is worth the effort. Birth control and education are the highest priority, but that only stems the tide of coming generations. Food production is the only thing we can do to ethically resolve hunger problems during this generation.!

???That's the whole point of ChromeOS...The OS is it's own "dropbox" service. Everything is web- or browser-based.?
Also, I'll go ahead and point this out. Scientists are human, and therefor fallible. Pointing out that a scientist is wrong does not make your own beliefs right, only proof can do that. |

My 80+ year old grandmother is online. So is my 90 year old grandfather. She prints self-made greeting cards, he lives his younger days playing COD1 and 2 killing Nazis. Ok not really on his part, more like Solitare.

There are pictures right below the article.Back in the 70s you could avoid a speeding ticket in the US by just outrunning the cops. Nowadays, over there many people have Ferraris and Lamborghinis, so the police need something to catch up with them. Seems reasonable.

Oh I'm sure they'll be really popular for a little while until someone figures out how to hack them and suddenly the place on your chest that was featuring a giant eagle clutching a crucifix has now become a showcase for gay porn. "Illustrated Man" indeed.

This isn't the first time this sort of thing has happened and it won't be the last. New England used to have a textile industry, then it moved to North Carolina, then it moved to China. Chicago used to have a meatpacking industry, then it moved to little towns in the Midwest (now those jobs are primarily staffed by illegal immigrants). Vermont/NH had tons of people pick up and move in the mid-1800s to the newly railroaded Great Plains states which offered more and more fertile land. These towns/cities are the necessary casualties in capitalism's "Creative Destruction." Overall, it's been a huge benefit to the country that we don't need 90% of the population involved in agriculture, but it's hard to tell that to the laborer who can't get a farm job and the mayor of a little midwest town in the 1960's who sees half his population move away. |
