Wow, very concise and informative. I had trouble putting what I wanted to mean into words. Thanks for saying it.Tarantino's characters are often women pushed into a violent male realm - and yes, they prove themselves, but by what male standard?Take Clarice, from Silence of the Lambs, or Marge from Fargo, or Katie from Paranormal Activity, for example. These are very good (and unfortunately rare) examples of real females, living realistic roles, and yet succeeding at very virtuous and gender-balanced accomplishments. They surpass their sexualized and feminine character role and fulfill themselves beyond their gender, beyond sex and sexiness. This is rarer than it would seem, because if you really, really, truly examine many 'pro-women' films, they're either of Tarantino formula (something like Million Dollar Baby or Enough) or a film that ultimately accepts the gender role and diminishes the individuality and power of the female.
I live in China at the moment.#2 is right on - there are way too many people working everywhere. Sometimes we'll go to a restaurant that is just a little on the fancy side and there'll be maybe 5-6 beautiful women in dresses just inside the doors waiting to greet us. That's their whole job. And we're talking about a place that maybe costs 40-100 yuan ($6-15) per person.#3 isn't so right for me because I live in a "small town" of around 500,000 people. We don't even have a genuine Wal-mart - we have a facsimile called RT Mart. I have been to two Wal-marts in China and they are both fairly similar to the RT Mart, except one of them was a 2-floor store and had an escalators with merchandise bins between the UP and DOWN escalator. So you see, maybe, Q-Tips and you think, oh yeah! and you grab them. It's like the End Cap concept on steroids.#4 plays in with #3. Many people make the space feel smaller. In fact, my store isn't particularly cramped. Some of the other stores in town (which few people go to anymore and are somewhat akin to the IGA in the US for the convenience factor) are more cramped, but still nothing to write home about.#5 is flat wrong. There are bags, but they are hidden away under the register and most Chinese don't get them because they cost 1-2 jiao (2 jiao = 0.2 yuan = $0.03) each. That doesn't seem like much and it really isn't, but Chinese go shopping frequently (some, every day), and 1000-2000 yuan ($150-300) per month is not a bad salary here (in my town). Anecdotal evidence is that the professors at my college earn 3000 yuan per month and work A LOT. But that's a lot of money here - with all my western proclivities, I still spend less than 3000 yuan per month.

@seltaeb4:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_man_argument@alpha88:Yeah, windows machines don't work, that's why it's the most popular OS. That's why so much work gets done on PCs everyday, they don't work. |

Don't forget, he's a big gay too! Why can't they re-criminalise gay sex instead?! It was so much more fun when we were breaking the law.

LOL... kind of like voice training for voice recognition devices? "Find nearest Pizza Parlor"..."Calling Big Gay Sam's Man-on-Man Massage Parlor"..."Cancel... Cancel... DAMNIT!" "Intel Brainchip x64 technology may have difficulty correctly interpreting thoughts in an Australian accent, we are currently working diligently to provide a patch for Australian English. Until that time, we are recommending all Australians with Brainchip x64 currently installed disable thought recognition and instead input instructions via a bluetooth enabled keyboard or other external input device".
