That doesn't seem like much and it really isn't, but Chinese go shopping frequently (some, every day), and 1000-2000 yuan ($150-300) per month is not a bad salary here (in my town). Anecdotal evidence is that the professors at my college earn 3000 yuan per month and work A LOT. But that's a lot of money here - with all my western proclivities, I still spend less than 3000 yuan per month.
