| I was born and lived in the South until I was 10 and moved to Chicago. I can assure you that the general understanding of the Civil War is very different in the North and South. In the north, the war was about slavery. In the south, the war was about states' rights. This topic is very fascinating to me, and what I have come to understand, is that it was both: A state's right to have slaves. Many northerners take the moral high ground and paint the Union army as fighting for the end of slavery. It was fighting purely for the reunification of the Union (with or without slavery). It wasn't until the Battle of Sharpsburg (Antietam, as it's called in the North), that allowed Lincoln to take the moral highground and turn the war into a war against slavery with the Emancipation Proclamation (which only "freed" the slaves IN STATES OF REBELLION). There were 4 slave states that didn't secede. Some Southerners try to completely ignore the issue of slavery, which is obviously silly.Back to your question, "The South Will Rise Again" is a saying that is interpreted in different ways. To northerners and blacks, it probably sounds like secessionist/racist rabble. To southerners, at least to me, it means a return to glory. I don't interpret the "rising again" as a renewal of the civil war. The last century and a half has been a tough one for the South and it just reminds us to be proud of where we're from. Some southerners might be referring to open hostilities, which is foolish because the war brought shame and destitution to the South. |
