A bigger pet-related issue is the amount of pets in shelters, and pets who haven't been spayed/neutered, many times because the owner isn't fit to care for an animal and doesn't know to have it done.My girlfriend and I recently found three abandoned kittens someone had dumped on the side of the road, while we were driving to FL on vacation. When we returned to GA, we contacted every shelter in the state, and all were fully packed.Yet most people who don't understand the issues will go to a pet store and pay hundreds for an animal when there are thousands of animals which require only a small adoption fee. Plus many shelters are operating purely on donations, and the SPCA organization in Atlanta is facing having to close, which is terrible.
